What does it take to pass the FS Exam?

One of the most common questions we get at NLC Prep is, how much knowledge is required to pass the fundamentals of surveying exam? The answer is a little tough. The answer is subjective and based off each individual person. While some people may pass the exam with relative ease, others could struggle.

We’ve compiled three important strategies to help you get on track.

Book knowledge.

Understanding how to compute a traverse, or solve a triangle, what priority calls should be held over others, all of these things can be learned in NLC’s online prep course. The course provides a step by step learning experience. The course combo includes other helpful study tools like Definitions and Associated Terms and a pre-programmed HP35 calculator. Book knowledge will assist you in the next strategy, field experience.

Practical experience.

Experience is required under the supervision of a professional land surveyor (PLS). Most states do not require this for the exam, however, we recommend having field experience as there are questions on the exam that could benefit from having practical knowledge. Keep in mind, experience is required for the Principles and Practice exam.

Study strategy.

This might be the most important part of the three strategies and it is what sets most students apart. On the exam, start from the beginning and get the easy questions out of the way first. Then, you’re free to focus on the harder computation questions. Once you’ve tackled those, move on to the harder questions you’re not sure about.
