If you’re considering a career in land surveying, Florida offers excellent opportunities thanks to its growing development, real estate, and infrastructure projects. But before you can call yourself a licensed Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) in Florida, you’ll need to complete a specific set of education, examination, and experience requirements.

This guide will walk you through each step of how to become a land surveyor in Florida—from your first exam to full licensure.

Step 1: Meet the Education Requirements

To become a licensed land surveyor in Florida, you’ll first need to satisfy the educational qualifications set by the Florida Board of Professional Surveyors and Mappers (FBPE). These generally include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in surveying and mapping from an ABET-accredited program
    OR

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., civil engineering, geomatics) with 25 semester hours of additional surveying coursework

Note: Florida does not currently accept purely experience-based applicants without formal education.

Step 2: Pass the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) Exam

The next step is to pass the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam administered by NCEES. This national exam is typically taken right after graduation and tests general surveying knowledge, including:

  • Geometry and trigonometry
  • Measurement and mapping
  • Geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Professional ethics and standards

After passing, you’ll be designated as a Surveyor-in-Training (SIT).

Step 3: Gain Work Experience

Before you’re eligible for the Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) license, Florida requires at least four years of work experience under a licensed PSM with a BS in Land Surveying and at least six years of work experience with a BS in a non-survey-related field.

Key requirements:

  • Must be progressive and supervised
  • Should involve boundary, topographic, construction, or legal surveying work
  • Should build toward independent professional competency

Be sure to track and document all relevant experience for your application.

Step 4: Pass the Principles & Practice of Surveying (PS) Exam

Once you have your experience, the next step is to pass the Principles & Practice of Surveying (PS) exam. This national exam also comes from NCEES and covers professional-level surveying topics.

But Florida has one more test…

Step 5: Pass the Florida State-Specific Exam

Florida requires all surveyors to pass a state-specific exam focused on local laws, administrative rules, and professional ethics. Topics include:

  • Florida Statutes related to land surveying
  • Florida Administrative Code (FAC)
  • Rules of the Florida Board of Professional Surveyors and Mappers
  • Local boundary law principles

Step 6: Apply for Licensure

Once you’ve passed the FS, PS, and Florida state-specific exams—and have your four years of experience—you’re ready to apply for licensure.

The application includes:

  • Transcripts and exam scores
  • Documentation of work experience
  • Application fees
  • Endorsements from licensed surveyors (if required)

Apply through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), Division of Licensing.

Step 7: Maintain and Renew Your License

Florida PSMs must renew their licenses every two years and complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE)—including 6 hours on Florida laws and rules.

Keeping your license active ensures you can:

  • Work legally as a surveyor in Florida
  • Take on more complex projects
  • Serve as an expert witness or project manager
