There are very few math questions on the PS exam. But if you see one, do you have the skills to answer it correctly? It’s been quite a number of years since land surveyors using traversing-by-deflection-angles in daily practice, but deflection angles certainly have some redeeming qualities. Learn how to compute deflection angles, convert them to interior angles, and then balance the angles just like a regular traverse right here.

The Question:

Analyze the following partial legal description. The only corner of the property that has been monumented is the point of commencement. Assume the true bearing of North Ridge Ave to 1/2″ pipe is N0°02’W.

Legal Description

“Beginning at the North Ridge Ave as it crosses Main St., thence northerly along the North Ridge Ave, 2481 feet to a 1/2″ pipe at the POB; thence N 29°17’E, 228.48 feet; thence S 28°55’E, 273 feet to the northeast corner of Tubb; thence N 58°30’E, 383 feet; …”

Which of the following deflection angles should be measured to find the second angle point in the property’s boundary.

Answer Choices

A) Deflect right 20°15′

B) Deflect left 29°17′

C) Deflect right 29°19′

D) Deflect left 152°43′
