What is the one thing I wish I knew during the FS Exam?
First, I wish that I knew what the FS Exam was. I was told I needed to take it, but not what was on the exam, how to study for it, and other important questions. So the first thing I did was research. After a little information from professors and a little information found online. I went onto the NCEES website and looked for pages about the FS Exam that explain applications, exam dates, and exam specifications. After obtaining all the information, studying, and using a test prep service, I still was very uncertain about the exam and whether or not I would pass.
What exactly is on the fundamentals of surveying exam?
The exam is 100 questions, 6 hours, and even after taking the exam, I was still uncertain about whether or not I had passed it. What do I wish I would have known before taking the fs exam?
I really wish I knew that the exam was more than a surveying exam. The FS exam contains math, computer science, environmental science, and geology.
Why those topics?
The fundamentals of surveying exam is built to take after obtaining a four year degree. With a surveying degree, you also take science, music, literature, English, business, and economics. Which means there will be questions related to some of those topics. Passing the exam is about being a well rounded surveyor.
So what if you haven’t obtained a bachelor’s degree?
Study like a scholar. To do that take a look at all the study materials available. Take an online test prep course, have a preprogrammed calculator before going in, watch YouTube videos and find some recommended books. Licensing exams are tough. So study hard, study smart and don’t forget to focus on other topics other than surveying.
